Teacher's Workshop
“Middle Eastern Culture, Arabic Language, and the Intelligence Community”
Program Dates: June 30, 2009 - August 6, 2009
Class Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11: 30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

The Teacher’s Cultural Awareness Workshop was developed as a component of the Center of Academic Excellence in National Security Intelligence Studies. The workshop will focus on providing Middle Eastern Language with emphasis on Arabic instructional seminars for middle school and high school teachers. The workshop is also designed to provide students with basic language patterns, vocabulary and cultural awareness. Emphasis will be placed on developing conversational and social skills that will be especially significant to the Intelligence Community.

- Eligibility Requirements:
- United States Citizen
- Any middle or high school teacher
- Willing to complete the 6-week course
- Sincere interest in learning about the Arabic Language, Middle Eastern Culture, and the Intelligence Community.
- Complete application and include one-page essay expressing interest in workshop

2.7 State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEU).

$400 Stipend - Must Attend all classes

All books and materials will be provided by the WSU.

This is a no-credit course; you do not have to be enrolled in WSU to participate.

The class size is limited to 15 students. It is imperative an application is completed and returned as soon as possible to reserve your place in the class.
Course Objectives:
- To assist teachers by expanding and identifying resources which are developmentally appropriate for teaching students grades 6-12.
- To provide an introduction of modern Middle Eastern culture from its members of the various cultural, social and religious organizations.
- To provide an overall understanding of the intelligence communities and its activities and missions.
- To help raise the level of individual student interest in current happenings of intelligence import and to assist in developing critical foreign language competencies, particularly in Middle Eastern languages through middle school and high school instruction.
- To give educators additional practice in written and oral presentations.
